Evaluation Policy
Evaluation is based on the point system. The
maximum score is 100 points/100%. The lowest positive score in a course
is 51 points, i. e. 51% of the maximum score.
The final exam has a prevailing significance. This
means that a student will be considered to have failed a course if
he/she failed the final examination, in spite of his/her achievements in
all the other evaluation components.
It is not allowed to evaluate the performance of a student throughout a semester only with a final examination
A Master student will be considered to have
failed a course and will have to retake it unconditionally if he/she
gets less than 70% at the final exam (the 35 points of the final exam
are considered 100%; 70% of 35=24,5, and if we put it in a round number -
24).
A Bachelor or higher professional program student
will be considered to have failed a course and will have to retake it
unconditionally if he/she gets less than 60% at the final exam (the 30
points of the final exam are considered 100%; 60% of the 30 points=18).
The UG uses a single university model for the
evaluation of students. In case of a different model of course
evaluation, it must be presented for approval by the council of the
corresponding school to the Academic council.
UG Evaluation Model for Masters Program Students:
-
Weekly Evaluation (written quiz, homework, oral quiz, or other activity determined by the teacher, which gives him/her an opportunity to evaluate the weekly performance of a student - 15 points / 15%
-
Midterm Examination (written or mixed) - 25 points / 25%
-
Written/Oral thesis, presentation or other activities pre-determined by the course lecturer - 25 points / 25%
-
Final Examination - 35 points / 35%
UG Evaluation Model for Higher Professional and Bachelors Program Students:
Weekly Evaluation (written quiz, homework, oral quiz, or other
activity determined by the teacher, which gives him/her an opportunity
to evaluate the weekly performance of a student - 18 points / 18%
- Midterm Examination 20 points / 20%
- Midterm Examination 20 points / 20%
- Final Examination 30 points / 30%
- Written Thesis – Presentation 6 points / 6%
- Attendance 6 points / 6%

For the attention of the lecturers and students:
scores are rounded according to the following principle: four and below
four – to the lower edge, while five and numbers above – to the higher
edge. e. g. 65, (4, 3, 2, 1) equals 65; 65, (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) equals 66).
In case of an “f” evaluation, the student has to
re-take the course and pays the cost of the credits of the course
foreseen in the contract (the cost of a credit is calculated by the
dividing the annual tuition fee of the program by 60).
If a student gets the “F”/”FX” evaluation due to
his/her English language incompetence, i. e. that the instructor is
confident that language was the main obstacle in understanding the
course, the Master student will temporarily be detached from the
Master’s program and will have to take a one-semester course in English.
The student will have to pay the English language course tuition
according to the prices set for such cases. After completing the one
semester of English and successfully passing the final exam, the student
will rejoin the Master’s studies.
A student is considered to have passed the course
if he gets a higher evaluation in a course than the “F”/”FX”, while an
academic year is considered to be completed if the GPA of Bachelors and
higher professional program freshmen equals: 1. 25; for the sophomores –
1.5; for Juniors, seniors and Masters students - 2.
Even in case of not having the “F”/”FX” evaluation
in any course, the student may still face the danger of being expelled
from the University. the University of Georgia practises the modern GPA
system of coefficient evaluation implying that for higher professional
and Bachelors program students the sum of accumulated points divided by
the quantity of courses during an academic year (except for the summer
semester) should not be less than 61 (for freshmen) 66 (sophomores), 71
(juniors, seniors), 71 (Masters). E. g. If a freshmen passed ten
courses, the sum of the points that he/she accumulated must not be less
than 610 (610:10=61). For such students GPA equals 1.25 and so he/she
can continue studying in the University for the next year.
If a student got 41-50 points out of the maximum,
he/she gets a one-time advantage of re-taking the final exam. The
retaking is not free and is determined by the special decree of the
Rector at the beginning of every academic year. Repetitive exams are
organized during the first week after the final exams are over. A
student wishing to retake an exam has to pass a written request to the
Curriculum office in three-days’ time after the results of the exams
have been published.
If a student accumulated 50 or more points before
the final examination, but failed to pass the final exam, he/she gets
the chance of re-taking the exam.
It should be taken into consideration that “FX” and
“F” evaluation=0 and is not counted. (Also, if a student accumulated
50, 49 or less, the GPA calculation presents 0 (zero). In this case,
he/she will be given a chance to register for the summer semester and to
retake the failed courses.
If a student fails to accumulate the sufficient GPA
coefficient even through the summer semester, he/she will be expelled
from the University for low academic performance.
Duration of programs
The duration of study differs according to the levels
(bachelor, master, doctor). The duration of study for high professional
education program is determined 2 – 2.5 years, consequently 4 – 5
semesters.
- The duration of bachelor educational program is determined 4 years, consequently 8 semesters;
- The duration of master educational program is determined 2 years, consequently 4 semesters;
- The duration of doctoral educational program is determined 3 years, consequently 6 semesters.
The duration of study for high professional, bachelor
and master educational programs might be prolonged if: student has
failed and had to retake the course, if due to the various reasons
master/doctoral had to take fewer subjects than determined and if
student had to take academic leave of absence.
Even the prolonged duration is limited:
- Bachelor educational program – 6 years;
- Master educational program – 5 years;
- Doctoral educational program – 6 years.
Credit system
Credit shows us with what intensity this or that
course has been passed, how many hours has been spent in lectures,
seminars or independent work. The University of Georgia employs a modern
credit-based evaluation policy which is based on the experience of
American and European universities.
The credit calculation is based on the European Credit System (ECTs)
- 1 ECT= 25 hours
- Out of 25 hours:
- 5 – lecture hours
- 14/16 hours - individual and practical work of a student, presentation, preparation of a thesis;
- 4/6 hour – exams: midterm exams (one or two), final exams.
- Majority of subjects consist 6 credits, but there are subjects with 1,2,3,4 and 5 credits.
Bachelor's program consist 240 ECTs.
Duration: 4 years, consequently 8 semesters
- General courses: 120 ECTs;
- Basically – I – IV semesters;
- Special courses: 102, 108, 114 ECTs, (depending on the type of the program, i.e. whether it finishes with courses, a bachelor's thesis or presentation) basically – V- VIII semesters;
- Internship/ practice – 6 credits;
- Bachelor's thesis 12 ECTs
- Presentation 6 ECTs
The practical programs, such as public
administration, business management and administration, media,
information technologies and others generally finish with subjects
and/or presentation.
Mater's program consist 120 ECTs
Duration: 2 years, consequently 4 semesters
- General courses: 30 ECTs;
- Special courses: 60 ECTs,
- Master's thesis 30 ECTs
- 6 ECTs individual lecture/seminars with supervisor
- 24 ECTs research and presentation
- Out of these 30 ECTs:
Doctoral program consist 180 ECTs
Duration: 3 years;
- Lecture/ seminars – 30 ECTs (10 ECTs per each year)
- Pedagogical practice – 18 ECTs (6 ECTS per year)
- Conferences/projects 12 ECTs (4 ECTs per year)
- Publications - 12 ECTs (4 ECTs per year)
- Research - 108 ECTs (36 ECTs per year)
Double-degree programs
Students enrolled in the business management,
tourism, economics and public administration faculty, based on their own
wish have an opportunity to get additional diploma of Academy of
Management ''UniMan'' (Grenoble; France); the additional conditions for
double-degree programs are set at the beginning of third academic year.
